“Mad Kings” of Charlottesville vs Richmond “Big Smoke”

The gentlemen wore white. So did these guys.

Virginia is for Lovers, you say? Well that slogan was coined at the Martin Agency in Richmond. And since this here’s the Charlottesville Squash Blog, we don’t care to hear it. Besides, as we all know, once you step on the squash court, you’re not in Virginia anymore.

And so it was that Saturday marked the renewal of an age-old rivalry of the genteel and well-heeled. No fisticuffs. No duels, no sabres, and no seconds. Just some good old fashioned three-dimensional chess, “five-man” style.

As you can likely infer from the results below, there was no lack of passion and drama at the Country Club of Virginia on Saturday, where a number of the matches went to four and five sets. But ultimately, the home team prevailed or fought to a draw in every “dual” match, winning the day with an aggregate score of 14-8.

Huge thanks to Tom Wallace and Patrick Chifunda for allowing us to put our grubby paws all over CCV, to Russ Sterling, who organized the Richmond squad, and to all the players and fans who made the event a success. The October rematch is forthcoming…
